Sorsby Quits Texas Tech For NFL Supplemental Draft Mid-Scandal

As one of college sports' most-talked-about athletes, Brendan Sorsby will be stepping away from Texas Tech football as their QB, instead shifting focus on the upcoming NFL supplemental draft. The legal battles between Sorsby, Texas Tech, and the NCAA also didn't help the situation.

Sorsby Steps Away from the Chaos

After what felt like a weeks-long car crash, Texas Tech's star quarterback has decided to put it all behind him: Texas Tech, the NCAA legal back-and-forth, college football, all of it.

Sorsby has decided to shift his focus towards the NFL and declaring for the 2026 supplemental draft. If, like me, you need a refresher on what the supplemental draft actually is and how it's different from the normal NFL draft, then you can check out Yahoo Sports' in-depth description.

Essentially, the supplemental draft is for players who have lost their college eligibility after the primary NFL draft deadline for whatever reason.

The deadline for the 2026 supplemental draft is June 22.

How We Got to This Point with Sorsby

Insert the joke about the Barenaked Ladies, but it's been one week since a temporary injunction order was filed allowing Sorsby to play for Texas Tech this season while he waited for his final judgment.

Sorsby was caught earlier this year placing over 9,000 bets on various sports, some of which included teams that he played on which is a big no-no in college football... really just in sports in general.

Many universities in the Big 12 and the SEC saw this as a blatant disregard for the rules and even attempted to boycott Texas Tech for supporting Sorsby. The issue gained so much attention that Texas Attorney General even dangled the threat of legal response to any universities choosing to protest the judge's order.

What Does Sorsby's Future Look Like?

A question must be asked, however, of how Sorsby's potential NFL career will be impacted by his decisions made in the NCAA. Specifically, whether this whole sports gambling fiasco will impact his ability to be recruited by professional teams.

From one perspective, why would you want someone on your team with a history of breaking rules? For others, they support Texas Tech's decision to stand with Sorsby and allow him to play. After all, football is only fun to watch when good players play, and Brandon Sorsby has proven to be one of the top prospects this year.

Depending on how you look at it, this could be the best of both (all three) worlds. Texas Tech gets to move on from being a highly detested team in college football, the NCAA can drop their legal feud with the QB, and Sorsby himself gets to move on to the NFL.

We just hope that this baggage doesn't hold him back as a prospective draft for pro ball. Perhaps only time will tell this summer during the supplemental draft—probably on par to be the most-watched in years.
