Lubbock Fatal Car Accident Kills One, Investigation Still Underway
One man has been killed following a car collision on University Avenue in Lubbock. The Lubbock Police Department (LPD) is still investigating, but they have released the crucial details.
Lubbock Fatal Collision
On May 14, LPD responded to a major car accident with injuries on the 4400 block of University Avenue around 3:30 in the morning.
When officers arrived, they found 35-year-old Joseph Vasquez suffering serious injuries. Vasquez was the driver and only occupant of his vehicle. He was rushed to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
What Happened?
Investigators state that an unmarked Texas Department of Public Safety vehicle was approaching the intersection of 50th and University. The trooper saw Vasquez speed through the red light, pressing the brakes to avoid a collision with Vasquez's car.
Another police cruiser was in the vicinity and witnessed Vasquez's disregard of the red light. Neither trooper was able to initiate a traffic stop because the fatal crash happened just moments later.
Vasquez's vehicle struck a curb at 44th Street and University Avenue before bouncing back and striking another curb. The momentum carried the vehicle north and into the corner of Courtyards on the Park apartment building.
Both troopers who witnessed the event attempted life-saving measures until EMS arrived, but Vasquez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
There were no injuries reported inside the apartment complex, and this investigation is still classified as ongoing.
