If your childhood included Blockbuster Friday nights, dial-up internet, Tamagotchis, cassette tapes, flannel shirts, AOL Instant Messenger, and arguing over whether the Backstreet Boys or NSYNC were better...you're going to want to mark your calendar.

Lubbock is about to take a trip back to one of the most unforgettable decades ever with The 90's Matrix Art Exhibit, a one-night-only event celebrating the music, art, fashion, and culture that defined an entire generation.

And yes...there will even be a 90s Lip Sync Battle as well!

Welcome Back To The 1990s

The event takes place Friday, August 7th, 2026, from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Caviel Art Gallery, located at 1719 Avenue A in downtown Lubbock.

Organizers describe the exhibit as "a multi-sensory journey through the 1990s, blending the gritty underground grunge movement with the colorful explosion of early digital culture and the dawn of the internet age."

Think of it as walking through a time capsule where Nirvana meets neon, graffiti meets technology, and everyone suddenly remembers what it sounded like when your modem tried to connect to AOL.

More Than Just Paintings

This isn't your typical art gallery experience.

Visitors can expect a collection featuring:

  • Paintings
  • Photography
  • Early digital artwork
  • Interactive displays inspired by 90s culture

The exhibit explores everything from grunge aesthetics to rave culture, while also touching on the strange excitement, and occasional panic, that surrounded the approaching Y2K era.

If you remember wondering whether every computer on Earth would crash when the calendar hit the year 2000...congratulations, you're officially part of the target audience!

It's Time To Lip Sync Like It's 1997

One of the night's biggest attractions promises to be the 90s-only Lip Sync Battle.

Participants are invited to bring their best 90s attitude, flannel, windbreaker, overalls, Doc Martens, or whatever looks like the 90s to you.

Here's how it works:

  • Choose any song released between 1990 and 1999
  • Register with the DJ as soon as you arrive
  • Submit your exact song title and artist
  • Then hit the stage and give it everything you've got

Whether you're channeling Alanis Morissette, Britney Spears, TLC, Green Day, Spice Girls, Pearl Jam, or Vanilla Ice, organizers want contestants to bring the energy...not just the lyrics.

A Nostalgia Night Lubbock Will Love

One thing I love about events like this is that they bring together people who grew up during one of pop culture's most unforgettable decades. The decade I grew up in.

Maybe you'll recognize an old toy.

Maybe you'll hear a song you haven't thought about in 25 years.

Or maybe you'll watch someone absolutely commit to a lip-sync performance of "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls.

Either way, it sounds like a fun and unique night in downtown Lubbock.

For more information or to enter the Lip Sync Battle, contact Curator Fernando Elisdee Perez at 806-241-2006.

Now if you'll excuse me...

I suddenly have the urge to dust off my flannel shirt, find my old CD binder, and remember how to survive without Wi-Fi.
