Dan Patrick Urges State to Block Camp Mystic License Renewal

(KNUE-FM) For many Texans, the devastation that took place last July at Camp Mystic is difficult to put into words. Now Lt. Governor Dan Patrick is requesting that state health officials not renew the operating license for Camp Mystic until lawmakers are done investigating the deaths of 27 campers and counselors during the flooding tragedy.

Why Dan Patrick Wants the License Delayed

This also comes right after nine families filed a lawsuit against state agency officials over the horrific event. Patrick wrote a letter to the Texas Department of State Health Services saying “key questions remain unanswered.”

Legislative Investigation Underway

This spring, a joint House and Senate committee will investigate how 27 campers and counselors died at Camp Mystic. He also mentioned, “there may be necessary corrective actions for Camp Mystic to take” which would help ensure the safety of future visitors.

DSHS said they cannot comment on pending litigation.

Camp Mystic Responds to Criticism

Although Camp Mystic issued a response and was not pleased with Dan Patrick’s comments.

“Camp Mystic Cypress Lake is in compliance with all aspects of the state’s new camp safety laws. There is, no regulatory basis to deny Camp Mystic Cypress Lake its license.”

The camp has said they have invited Dan Patrick and other Texas leaders to visit the facility, but Patrick has not agreed or even responded at this point.
