First things first. I have the deepest respect for women. It started with my mother, one of the finest women I've ever known. Women are taking the world by storm, in every sector. Fierce and empowered, a force to be reckoned with. From the professional world to our military and everything in between, women are taking things to new heights.

Anybody who knows me knows I'm a total music nerd. If I'm not listening to it, I'm playing it on the radio or reading about it. Victoria Advocate spotlights several women from right here in Texas who have helped shape music. With March being National Women's History Month, I wanted to highlight these successful artists grown right here in Texas. From pop to country to R&B, these women have been at the forefront of their fields. Their contributions make the world of music a better place.

Janis Joplin

You can't mention women from Texas who helped shape music without bringing up Janis Joplin. From Port Arthur, she's one of the most widely-known rock stars of her time. Starting out as the lead singer for Big Brother and the Holding Company, Janis shot up in popularity and appeared at the Woodstock festival. After releasing just three albums (two with Big Brother and the Holding Company), she died from a heroin overdose at the age of 27.

Tanya Tucker

This powerful woman from Seminole got her start at an early age. Her first hit was "Delta Dawn" back in 1972. She was 13. Incredible. What's amazing to me is that she's kept her audience all these years, plus gained a new generation of music lovers. She's a household name in country music.

These women are pioneers in their field, much like my friends at Living Chic, a woman-owned business right here in Abilene. Living Chic is Abilene's unique boutique for antiques and fine home furnishings. Their upstairs counterpart, Looking Chic, is a full-service salon specializing in pampering the Abilene woman.
