I read an alarming statistic recently that I just had to share. As the mother of a teen who will be driving in a few, short years, when I hear anything about texting and driving, it grabs my attention.

According to the government, texting while driving on the highway at 55 mph takes your eyes off the road for the length of a football field. Think about it, let's be real, the way West Texans drive it's even more than that because our speed limit is 75. Scary stuff for someone like me, who has been driving for years, much less for a teen who just got their license. For example, I just read about this 16 year old who was on her first 'solo drive' and police are speculating that she was texting while driving. Her vehicle slammed into a tractor-trailer and she was killed.

Parents share this story with your kids, talk to them and make them aware of the dangers of texting while driving. There are also apps for your smartphone that will actually block texts while you are driving.
