LP&L Assures ERCOT Reliability Ahead Of Winter Storm, But Here Are Some Tips To Keep In Mind

With the cold weather here and continuing to drop people are really worried about the power grid.

This storm is reminding everyone of the deadly storm Uri from February 2021. ERCOT said the state is equipped to handle the high demand, adding that there is less to worry about with this storm compared to winter storm Uri because ERCOT has been working on winterizing the grid.

ERCOT has added an inspection program to prepare for events like these. While it will be cold, it does come to a big benefit that there is no expected ice or snow for this cold front coming. It will be in the single digits though.

According to KLBK and LP&L:

“If it’s single digits in Dallas-Ft. Worth and it’s in the teens in Houston and South Texas, there’s very little chance there wouldn’t be rolling outages in those sorts of conditions. It’s just too much demand for the amount of power that we have,” Lewin said. “But from what I’ve looked at yesterday and today, it’s looking like [it will be] 8 to 10 degrees warmer.”

ERCOT is using a new group of generators that are able to power up quickly during rapid changing weather along with more fuel for generators in case natural gas providers run short. Right now, LP&L said you can start voluntary changes to save some energy ahead of the cold.

They told KLBK, “We’re now going to go through a step-by-step process to make sure that we maintain the reliability of the grid, and it is making sure that you’re monitoring your electric usage on big appliances during peak times during the day and making little switches on your end."

Should the power go out, there are some survival tips.

If you have no heat source, block any openings around doors and windows. Gather blankets, pillows, and everything cozy that you have. Discover the art of snuggling. Three kids or two adults per blanked works.  Pets count as kids.

Remember, to keep generators far from the house, so you don't get carbon monoxide poisoning. Do not use generators camp stoves, charcoal grills, gas grills, or similar appliances inside the house.

Try to put food from your fridge in a cooler, so you aren't opening the fridge and letting the cold air out.

As for food, you will want to stock up on canned food and dry goods that don't need cooking. If you have a gas or charcoal grill, you can use that outside.
