Alicia Keys, Janelle Monae and Maxwell performed at the Women’s March in Washington, D.C., on Saturday (Jan. 21). According to reports, 500,000 women (and men) converged to the nation’s capital in protest of President Donald Trump.

Keys recited Maya Angelou’s poem “Still I Rise” before engaging the crowd in a sing-a-long of her fiery hit “Girl on Fire.” Fellow songbird Monae, who appears in the inspirational movie Hidden Figures, paid tribute to her late grandmother who was a sharecropper, and her mother and a janitor. “I am a descendent of them, and I am here in their honor to help us move forward and ‘fem the future,’” she said. Monae then performed her her song “Hell You Talmbout,” which was dedicated to Sandra Bland.

Madonna was next and she delivered a profanity-filled speech aimed directly at Trump and his administration. “Welcome to the revolution of love, to the rebellion, to our refusal as women to accept this new age of tyranny, where not just women are in danger but all marginalized people, where being uniquely different right now might truly be considered a crime. It took this horrific moment of darkness to wake us the f— up,” she said.

“To our detractors that insist that this march will never add up to anything, f— you, she added and then repeated the expletive three more times. Madge then performed “Express Yourself” and “Human Nature” (*not the Michael Jackson song*).

Later, Maxwell graced the stage and performed a tender rendition of Kate Bush’s song “This Woman’s Work.”
