Macklemore and Ryan Lewis Go Old School With ‘Downtown’ Performance at 2015 MTV Video Music Awards [VIDEO]
Just like the music video that was released on Thursday (Aug. 27), Macklemore kicked off the performance of his song centered on a moped outside. The rapper, sporting a long-sleeved green shirt covered by a leather vest, proceeded to stroll down an alley with five dancers. Then hip-hop legends Kool Moe Dee, Grandmaster Caz and Melle Mel popped out to spit their verses. Even Foxy Shazam’s Eric Nally commanded to the crowd with his bold lyrics.
The “Thrift Shop” rhymer ended up in front of the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles to team up with Ryan Lewis. Breakdancers kicked out some windmills as Lewis moved to join Macklemore on top of the blue stage (after he used the dancers to flip him around). Behind them boasted a LED-lit sign that read “Downtown,” the name of their song.
While the performance was filled with raw energy, many spectators couldn’t help but notice that it’s reminiscent of Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” music video. It was made even more awkward since Mars went on to accept the award for Best Male Video directly after the “Downtown” performance.
“Tell Bruno I got his back when he jumps Macklemore for biting his ‘Uptown’ performance,” tweeted a VMA watcher.
“Bruno just wasted a great opportunity to diss Macklemore for ripping off his song,” tweeted another.
Also, it seems that Kanye West was none too impressed with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performance.
