Maryland Rapper Finally Unites With 81-Year-Old Woman He Met Online Playing ‘Words With Friends’
Though at times the internet can seem like a vile place, filled with visceral hate, it’s stories like these that show the good things that the world wide web can facilitate. A 22-year-old up-and-coming rapper from Maryland (he moved to Harlem three months ago) recently befriended, and eventually ended up meeting, an 81-year-old woman he was introduced to while playing Words With Friends.
It all began last summer when Spencer, who goes by the rap name Half Empty (his producer moniker is High Class Filth), started playing Words With Friends with Roz, a Florida resident. Words With Friends is an online crossword puzzle game, along the same vein as Scrabble. They ended up going at it, playing over 300 games in total, and forming a long-distance bond. Recently, Amy Butler, a pastor at The Riverside Church in upper Manhattan, agreed to set up a meeting between Half Empty and Roz, and flew to Florida with the rapper.
He wrote about the trip on Twitter and shared images of their first time meeting. “So last summer I randomly met this 80 y/o woman on words with friends,” he tweeted. “We played 300+ games together and she actually ended up becoming a good friend of mine. Today I got to go to Florida and meet her in person.”
Half Empty and Amy traveled all the way to the Florida retirement community Roz stays in and kicked it with her, making for a heartwarming meet up. And if you are wondering, Spencer has won 210 out of their 324 games.
