Happy Birthday, Mims!
Today, March 22, is the 37th birthday of New York rapper MIMS. Shawn Mims grew up in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan and was heavily influenced by Harlem hip-hop. MIMS was an affiliate of fellow uptown MC Cam'ron and learned the business of music from Dipset.
When he was signed to Capitol Records in The MC shot to fame when his 2007 single "This Is Why I'm Hot" off his debut album, Music Is My Savior, shot to No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The catchy hook and Mim's laid back rhymes caught the attention of fans and made the song a summer hit. The song's audible familiarity struck a chord with hip-hop fans because it sampled other established hip-hop hits including Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks,” E-40’s “Tell Me When to Go,” Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s “Nuthin But a ‘G’ Thang” and Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones Part II.” Co-written by MIMS and produced by Miami-based Blackout Movement, the standout track went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart and reached No. 2 slot on Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs/ "This Is Why I'm Hot" is certified platinum by the RIAA.
After dropping his sophomore album, Guilt, in 2009, MIMS was unable to duplicate the smash success of his previous hit and faded into the background. But no one can deny the replay value of MIMS' biggest claim to fame. Still, MIMS' Music Is My Savior celebrates its ten-year anniversary this year. As of recently, he just won a start-up competition for his app RecordGram.
Happy Birthday to MIMS!
