As expected, Eminem made his grand return at the 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday (Nov. 12). Slim Shady opened the awards ceremony with a performance of his much talked-about new single, “Walk on Water.”

Although Beyoncé wasn’t there to sing the aching chorus, Skylar Grey, the song’s co-producer and writer, handled the hook duties while Em recited his fiery rhymes. Dressed in a black hoodie, grey sweatpants and white sneakers, the Detroit rhymer performed the first verse in an empty pub before finishing the rest of the song at SSE Arena in Wembley, London.

In addition to his performance, Eminem also nabbed the Best Hip-Hop trophy at the MTV EMAs, which was presented by hip-hop icons Chuck D and B-Real.

"I wanna thank Chuck D and B-Real," he said. "They’re one of the reasons I’m able to be here right now. These guys are like gods to me."

Eminem's performance kick starts his promo run for his upcoming album, Revival, which is expected to arrive on Nov. 17.

On the debut episode of Rick Rubin and Malcolm Gladwell’s Broken Record podcast, Em talked about "Walk on Water" and the message behind the song.

“It’s a very moral song," he said. “It’s mortality, not being Superman and what if I can’t come up with the best shit I wrote every single time?”

Next up for Eminem is a musical performance on the Nov. 18 episode of Saturday Night Live with host Chance the Rapper.
