New Movie Releases: April 2016
With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hitting theaters this month and Captain America: Civil War arriving in May, April offers us a chance to catch our breath a bit between superhero movies and steel ourselves for the blockbuster onslaught of summer. Next month brings exciting films like The Jungle Book and Key & Peele’s Keanu, along with the totally bonkers Huntsman: Winter’s War and a few thrilling indies (Green Room, anyone?). There’s much more in store in our guide to April’s new movie releases.
‘Batman vs. Superman’ B-Roll Footage Shows Off the Batmobile, Explosions and Goofy Actors
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters this week (in four days, but who’s counting?), and although we’ve seen plenty of footage in all the trailers and TV spots, Warner Bros. has released another preview of Zack Snyder’s superhero epic — just in case you’re feeling a bit impatient. Four minutes of B-roll footage has arrived online, offering a sneak peek at some previously unseen sequences, along with another look at the Batmobile in action and one particularly silly Laurence Fishburne.
‘Fifty Shades Darker’ Casts ‘The Knick’s Eric Johnson to Give Mr. Grey Some Competition
So far, all the new casting additions for Fifty Shades Darker have been women, making it seem as though the sequel does nothing to disprove the idea that this is a crazy-pants world in which everything and everyone revolves around Christian Grey. If you were getting tired of looking at that guy, good news: not only has the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel added a new male cast member, but he’s going to be competing for our attention (and Ana’s too, sure).
‘Bad Boys 3’ Director Joe Carnahan Shares Concept Images
Last summer we learned that Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) was interested in directing Bad Boys 3, which Sony has scheduled for a 2017 release. He was never officially confirmed for the job, but these new pre-visualization images he shared on Twitter are all the confirmation you need that Carnahan is behind the wheel on the long-developing sequel.
‘Hardcore Henry’ Trailer: This First-Person POV Action Flick Looks Intense
Hardcore Henry premiered at TIFF last fall under the title Hardcore, and swiftly inspired a bidding war over distribution rights for the innovative first-person POV action flick. Directed by Ilya Naishuller and executive-produced by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted), Hardcore takes the concept of first-person shooter video games and transforms it into one relentless, action-packed and gnarly film that’s sure to draw comparisons to RoboCop.
‘Gods of Egypt’ Super Bowl Spot: Bow Before Gerard Butler and His CGI Monsters
Gods of Egypt is looking to get in on some of that Super Bowl hype with its very own prime TV spot, which has arrived online ahead of tomorrow's big game, proving that even the most ridiculous movies need some Super Bowl attention — actually, this one could really use it. Alex Proyas' new fantasy-action film has drawn plenty of scorn for its mostly-white cast and its abundance of CGI silliness, and the best case scenario is that we've found this year's Winter's Tale.
Tom Cruise Met With Jerry Bruckheimer About ‘Top Gun 2,’ And There’s a Photo to Prove It
We’ve heard about Top Gun 2 for several years now, but with the passing of original director Tony Scott and Tom Cruise’s consistently busy schedule, it’s hard to believe that it might actually happen. We may be closer to that long-developing sequel than ever before, as Cruise has met with producer Jerry Bruckheimer about Top Gun 2, and there’s photographic evidence to prove it.
‘Batman v Superman’ Also Stars ‘The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan
In case you didn’t spot her in the trailer, or you were merely distracted by fellow The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan standing next to her, we now have confirmation that the actress playing Martha Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is, in fact, Lauren Cohan. The actress’ name has popped up on IMDb, confirming her small but integral role in Zack Snyder’s upcoming film.
Rumor: ‘Star Wars: Episode 8’ Is Getting a Slight Rewrite in Response to ‘The Force Awakens’ Reactions
Rewrites are common in filmmaking, especially for big blockbuster films, where there are so many moving parts that filmmakers sometimes need to recalibrate to keep things focused — which makes this rumor about Star Wars: Episode VIII hardly surprising. Rumor has it that Rian Johnson’s screenplay may be undergoing a few minor rewrites as a response to the reactions to The Force Awakens, and while that sentence may trigger an eyebrow raise, you should know that this is totally a good thing — if true.
Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith Boycotting 2016 Oscars, Chris Rock Calls Out Academy for ‘White BET Awards’
For the second year in a row, every actor nominated in all four acting categories for the Academy Awards is a white person. All 20 nominees for Best Actor and Actress and Best Supporting Actor and Actress are white people, reigniting the Twitter hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. And while many of us are comfortable in our power to merely comment via social media, there are a couple of strong voices who are fed up and ready to do something about it: director Spike Lee and actor Jada Pinkett-Smith have announced plans to boycott the Oscars this year, while the host of the 2016 awards himself has called the Academy out for their persistent negligence to nominate people of color.
